    Uses :

    Alfacalcidol Alfacalcidol is used to treat symptoms of rickets and osteomalacia such as softening and deforming of bones. It is also used to treat symptoms caused due to osteodystrophy (kidney failure). Alfacalcidol is used to correct calcium levels in the newborn. Calcium Calcium carbonate is a dietary supplement used for the treatment of osteoporosis (weakening of bones). It is used to treat the symptoms such as acidity, heartburn, stomach upset or indigestion.

    Mode of drug action

    Alfacalcidol Alfacalcidol is a vitamin D3 hormone. It is activated by 25-hydroxylase enzyme in the liver, the active form of vitamin D3, calcitriol binds to intracellular receptors that increase the reabsorption of calcium in renal tubule, GI absorption, osteoclastic resorption thus ensures a large amount of calcium availability in the body. Calcium Calcium carbonate is an inorganic salt that neutralizes the hydrochloric acid, this results in the formation of calcium chloride, carbon dioxide, and water, thus increasing the levels of calcium in the body. Calcium is used along with vitamin D3 for better absorption.

    What are the common side effects?

    Alfacalcidol The most reported alfacalcidol side effects are frequent urination, swelling of body parts, dry mouth, thirst, skin rashes, itching, urticaria, feeling sick or weak. Calcium The common side effects of calcium carbonate are belching, constipation, loss of appetite, skin allergies like itching, hives, rashes, headache, mood changes, and confusing or irritability.

    Special precautions for safe use

    • Alfa Ostebon tablet is not recommended to the patients with hypercalcemia (high levels of calcium in the body).

    • Alfa Ostebon medicine contains Arachis oil and glycerol. Patients allergic to arachis or soya should avoid the drug.

    • Pregnant women should take doctor’s advice before taking Alfa Ostebon. Do not self medicate.

    • Overweight people need to have more vitamin D3, as vitamin D is dissolved and stored in fat cells rather than circulating in the blood.

    • Discuss with the doctor how to use Alfa Ostebon drug with antifungal drugs or cephalosporins, as they may have drug-drug interactions.

    1. I am diagnosed with renal calculi. Can I use alfacalcidol? No, patients with renal calculi should not take alfacalcidol drug.

    2. I am 65 years old. Can I use alfacalcidol? Alfacalcidol should be used with caution in elderly, as they are sensitive to the side effects of alfacalcidol.

    3. What is the effect of alfacalcidol in pregnant women? Alfacalcidol is prescribed to pregnant women only if needed. Consult your doctor before using the drug.

    4. I am on digoxin. Can I use alfacalcidol? No, concomitant use of alfacalcidol with digoxin is not recommended due to worsening of side effects.
