    Mode of drug action

Hydroxyzine reduces the levels of histamine in the body by blocking the H1 receptors. H1 receptors are histamine receptors that belong to the family of G- protein coupled receptors. These receptors are found in smooth muscles, in the central nervous system (CNS) and on the vascular endothelial cells and in the heart. Histamine is a neurotransmitter, increase in histamine levels causes itching, increases the permeability of blood vessels and causes swelling and redness in the skin. Histamine also causes vasodilatation resulting in hypotension and tachycardia. High histamine level causes severe bronchoconstriction and difficulty in breathing. It also affects the functioning of CNS and causes wakefulness, insomnia, restlessness and other symptoms of anxiety.
