    Atorvastatin uses include regulation of the fat levels in the body when the diet and lifestyle changes are not effective. It lowers the cholesterol levels and is useful for patients with a high risk of heart diseases.

    Mode of drug action


    Atorvastatin acts by inhibiting an enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase which is involved in the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver. It also increases the breakdown of the cholesterol by enhancing its uptake by the liver cells.

    What are the common side effects?

    The most commonly experienced atorvastatin side effects are diarrhea, nausea, indigestion, pain in the extremities, urinary tract infections, inflammation of the nasal passages, pain in the throat, nose bleed, joint pain, muscle pain and back pain, liver function abnormalities, and sleep disorders. The atorvastatin side effects, depression, pancreatitis, anaphylactic reactions, fatigue, etc. may occur at a lower frequency.

    Special precautions for safe use

    • Atocor tablet can be taken with or without food. Consult the physician and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for safe use.

    • People who are allergic to Atocor or its contents should avoid taking the drug.

    • Do not start or continue taking the tablets without the doctor’s advice.

    • Pregnant and breastfeeding women must consult the doctor before administering the drug.

    • Before using Atocor tablet, inform the doctor about the current list of medications. Use only as recommended.

    • Elderly patients who are above 65 years; and patients with uncontrolled hypothyroidism and kidney failure should use the drug with caution due to the risk of muscle disorders.

    • Do not drink excess alcohol (more than 2 glasses per day) while taking tab Atocor.

    • Avoid intake of excess fat containing food, it may reduce the effectiveness of Atocor.

    • Consult the doctor in case of dark colored urine or yellowing of eyes or skin.

    1. Is breast enlargement in men a side effect of atorvastatin? Breast enlargement in men also called, gynecomastia is a very rare side effect of atorvastatin.
