    Uses:

Clavulanic acid is widely used to treat the common bacterial infections, respiratory tract infections, and urinary tract infections. Clavulanic acid is also prescribed during the myeloablative therapy followed by bone marrow transplantation. Lactobacillus is a friendly bacterium used in the treatment of diarrhea in children, infections or discharge from vagina, and irriatable bowel syndrome (IBS). Amoxicillin is one among the penicillin group of antibiotics which is prescribed during the treatment for bacterial infections. Amoxicillin is of great benefit for tonsil pain relief, treatment for sinus infection, genital and urinary tract infection, teeth and gum infections, respiratory tract infections, and it is a common antibiotic for many bacterial infections.

How does the drug work ?

Beta-lactamase is a protein secreted by few bacteria which can make them resistant to some antibiotics such as penicillin/cephalosporin. Clavulanic acid irreversibly inactivates a wide variety of beta-lactamases, thereby making the penicillin/cephalosporin drugs more potent. Lactobacillus maintains the required balance of other microflora in the intestine thereby, improving the patient’s condition. Amoxicillin interferes with the production of the bacterial cell wall; it weakens and ruptures the cell wall of the bacteria thereby killing them.

What are the common side effects ?

The common side effects associated with potassium clavulanate are increased transaminase level in the blood, maculopapular rash, urticaria, diarrhea, and fever. The common reported side effects Lactobacillus are gas and bloating. The common side effects associated with amoxicillin include nausea and vomiting, headache, allergic reaction, rash, diarrhea, stomach pain, vaginal itching, and vaginal discharge.

    FAQs:
    Clavulanic acid:

    1. Why is clavulanic acid combined with amoxicillin? Clavulanic acid, when combined with the drug amoxicillin, helps in improving its potency by preventing degradation of the drug.

    2. Is clavulanic acid used only in combination with amoxicillin? No, clavulanic acid is also used in combination with other penicillin’s and cephalosporins such as cefixime.

    3. Does clavulanic acid cause diarrhea? Yes, one of the side effects of clavulanic acid is diarrhea.

    4. How does clavulanic acid help to improve the potency of amoxicillin? Clavulanic acid is a ?-lactamase inhibitor a protein secreted by the bacteria to destroy amoxicillin. By destroying this protein, it improves the potency by preventing the degradation of the drug.

    5. Is clavulanic acid an antibiotic itself? Yes, clavulanic acid, when administered alone, has weak antibacterial activity against most organisms. Lactobacillus:

    1. How to take antibiotics while using Lactobacillus? Give a gap of at least 2 hours between the two medicines. This is because taking them together can kill the Lactobacillus bacterium.

    2. Is it safe to use Lactobacillus in vagina? Yes. Lactobacillus can be safely used by women inside the vagina for the treatment of vaginal infections.

    3. Is Lactobacillus given for short bowel syndrome? No. People with short bowel syndrome have increased risk of developing Lactobacillus infections. Talk to a doctor for an appropriate medication for you.

    4. How should I store Lactobacillus? Store Lactobacillus in a refrigerator but do not freeze it.

    5. Can I use Lactobacillus during pregnancy? Due to the unknown safety of Lactobacillus during pregnancy, use it only with a doctor’s recommendation. Amoxicillin:

    1. Is amoxicillin safe for children? Yes, amoxicillin is safe for children when taken in the prescribed dose. Amoxicillin dosage for children differs from that of adults.

    2. Can I take amoxicillin for a sore throat, cold, cough, and flu? Amoxicillin is only effective against bacterial infections, not viruses. A sore throat, cold, and cough caused due to bacteria can be treated with amoxicillin, but the flu cannot be treated as it is a viral infection.

    3. Does amoxicillin cause constipation? No. Amoxicillin does not cause constipation. Consult your doctor if you notice such side effects.

    4. How long does amoxicillin take to work? The time taken for the amoxicillin to show its action may depend on the type and severity of the infections. However, it would take anywhere between one to seven days.

    5. Does amoxicillin act against anaerobic bacteria? Yes. Amoxicillin is active against both aerobic as well as anaerobic bacterial infections.
