    Atorvastatin uses include regulation of the fat levels in the body when the diet and lifestyle changes are not effective. It lowers the cholesterol levels and is useful for patients with a high risk of heart diseases.

    How does the drug work ?

    Atorvastatin acts by inhibiting an enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase which is involved in the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver. It also increases the breakdown of the cholesterol by enhancing its uptake by the liver cells.

    What are the common side effects ?

    The most commonly experienced atorvastatin side effects are diarrhea, nausea, indigestion, pain in the extremities, urinary tract infections, inflammation of the nasal passages, pain in the throat, nose bleed, joint pain, muscle pain and back pain, liver function abnormalities, and sleep disorders. The atorvastatin side effects, depression, pancreatitis, anaphylactic reactions, fatigue, etc. may occur at a lower frequency.

    Important Information for Safe Use:

    • Avas medicine is not recommended for people with liver diseases, history of stroke, women of childbearing age, pregnant and nursing women, history of hypersensitivity to the drug or history of muscle problems with the drug.

    • Elderly patients who are above 65 years; and patients with uncontrolled hypothyroidism and kidney failure should use the drug with caution due to the risk of muscle disorders.

    • Cautious use is recommended for people with Lou Gehrig's disease (a motor neuron disease) due to an increased risk of functional decline. Do not use Avas with the antifungal drug (posaconazole), due to the increased risk of certain muscle disorders.

    • The drug should be used with caution while co-administering with certain antiviral agents. Additional monitoring is required in the patients with respiratory failure, high blood pressure and high level of sugars in the blood and those who are overweight.

    • Do not drink excess alcohol (more than 2 glasses per day) while taking the medicine Avas.
