Amoxicillin is one among the penicillin group of antibiotics which is prescribed for the treatment for bacterial infections. Amoxicillin present in the drug is of great benefit for tonsil pain relief, treatment for sinus infection, genital and urinary tract infection, teeth and gum infections, respiratory tract infections, and it is a common antibiotic for many bacterial infections. Clavulanic acid is widely used to treat the common bacterial infections, respiratory tract infections, and urinary tract infections. Clavulanic acid is also prescribed during the myeloablative therapy followed by bone marrow transplantation.
How does the drug work ?
Amoxicillin interferes with the production of the bacterial cell wall; it weakens and ruptures the cell wall of the bacteria thereby killing them. Beta-lactamase is a protein secreted by few bacteria which can make them resistant to some antibiotics such as penicillin/cephalosporin. Clavulanic acid irreversibly inactivates a wide variety of beta-lactamases, thereby making the penicillin/cephalosporin drugs more potent.
What are the common side effects ?The common side effects associated with amoxicillin include nausea and vomiting, headache, allergic reaction, rash, diarrhea, stomach pain, vaginal itching, and vaginal discharge. The common side effects associated with clavulanic acid are increased transaminase level in the blood, maculopapular rash, urticaria, diarrhea, and fever.
Important Information for Safe Use:
• Avoid the medication tablet if allergic to amoxicillin or any other penicillin.
• Avoid the drug Azomentin if allergic to amoxicillin or any other penicillin drugs.
• Avoid stomach upset by taking Azomentin medicine with food.
• Do not panic incase of loose stools. Diarrhea is one among Azomentin side effects, which gets better once the course is finished. If the condition worsens, consult the doctor.
• Drug Azomentin can alter the action of birth control pills making them less effective, and there may be a chance of pregnancy.
• Maintain a minimum of 4 hours lag between each Azomentin dosage. Do not take two doses in 1 hour.
• Do not stop the medication in the middle of the treatment; even after feeling better. Do not take the medicine Azomentin for more than two weeks.
• Consult the doctor before taking Azomentin medication during pregnant or breast feeding.
