    Uses :

    Albendazole is used in the treatment of different types of worm infections such as neurocysticercosis, hydatid disease, echinococcosis, and pinworm infection.

    Mode of drug action


    Albendazole is as an anti-helminthic drug. Albendazole works by impairing the glucose uptake by the worms thereby causing energy depletion and worm death. It exhibits larvicidal, ovicidal and vermicidal activity.

    What are the common side effects?

    The common side effects of albendazole include abdominal pain, vision changes, diarrhea, dizziness, constipation, vomiting, headache, nausea, skin rashes, and itching.

    Special precautions for safe use

    • Take Bendex medication as per the instructions by the doctor. The drug can be taken with or without food, however taking the drug after the meal is preferable.

    • Avoid using Bendex medication if allergic to albendazole.

    • The Bendex drug should be used with caution in the patients with liver or kidney disease and retinal lesions. Bendex medicine is contraindicated in pregnant and lactating women.

    • Long-term use of Bendex medicine may cause severe liver complications. Therefore, liver function tests should be performed at least every two weeks during the treatment.

    • A diet rich in fiber foods is beneficial to prevent constipation that occurs due to Bendex use. Bendex medication may also cause potentially life-threatening conditions such as bone marrow suppression which leads to aplastic anemia, leucopenia and pancytopenia.

    • The use of Bendex drug should not be discontinued unless instructed by the doctor. Because, stopping the drug abruptly may cause rebound effects.

    1. Does albendazole cause liver damage? Long-term use of albendazole may cause liver damage. The signs and symptoms of liver damage include dark yellow or brown urine, yellowing of the eyes or skin, pain in the right upper abdomen. Consult your doctor if you examine any of the above symptoms.

    2. Is albendazole available without a prescription? No, albendazole is available only when prescribed by the doctor.

    3. Can I take cimetidine along with albendazole? Albendazole may interact with cimetidine when used together. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking the drug.

    4. Do I need to undergo liver function tests while on albendazole therapy? Yes, long-term use of albendazole may cause liver damage. Therefore, liver function tests are used to monitor your condition.
