    Berberine is a naturally occurring compound found in some plants such as berberis, berberis aristata. It is used in the treatment of diabetes, arrhythmia, and some cancers.

    Mode of drug action


    Berberine belongs to protoberberine group of benzylisoquinoline alkaloids. It has anti-microbial, glucose and cholesterol lowering activities. Berberine activates an enzyme called APMK, that helps to maintain healthy blood sugar levels. It is used along with other medications to treat hypoglycemic condition.

    What are the common side effects?

    Berberine does not cause any side effects when taken in the normal doses. Side effects with higher doses are not studied.
