    Itraconazole is used to treat fungal infections of the lungs, throat, mouth, and other parts of the body.

    Mode of drug action


    Itraconazole belongs to the imidazole group of antifungal agent. Itraconazole inhibits the conversion of lanosterol into ergosterol. Ergosterol is an essential enzyme useful for the synthesis of the fungal cell wall. Inhibition of ergosterol facilitates cellular permeability resulting in the leakage of cellular contents of the fungal cell, causing the death of the cell. It also inhibits transformation of yeast to mycelial forms and inhibits phospholipids or triglyceride biosynthesis.

    What are the common side effects?

    The common side effects of itraconazole are depression, joint pains, drowsiness, dizziness, heartburn, running nose, headache, hair loss, and constipation.

    Special precautions for safe use

    • To clear the infections completely, use itraconazole for its full course treatment.

    • Alcohol may worsen the canditral side effects such as dizziness and drowsiness. So, avoid consumption of alcohol while taking the drug.

    • Diabetic patients should take Canditral drug with high caution, as it lowers the blood sugar levels. Regular monitoring of blood levels is required.
