    Uses :

    Desogestrel is a type of progesterone which is a female sex hormone. It is a combination hormone medication used to prevent pregnancy.

    Mode of drug action

    Desogestrel acts by preventing ovulation. It also changes cervical mucus and prevents the entry of sperm cells into the womb. It further changes the lining of the uterus to prevent egg from implanting in uterus.

    What are the common side effects?

    The common side effects of desogestrel are vaginal bleeding, mood changes, decrease in sexual drive, acne, breast pain, headache, nausea, irregular or no periods, and weight gain.

    Special precautions for safe use

    • Do not pick Cerazette tablet randomly from a fresh pack. Take the tablet from the first row marked for that day.

    • If the patient has a history of blood clotting disorders, liver problems, gall bladder disorders, high blood pressure, hearing problems, diabetes, breast cancer, heart problems, high blood cholesterol or a migraine headache, a doctor should be consulted before taking Cerazette pill.

    • Patients experiencing sudden chest pain and difficulty in breathing, chest pain that spreads to arm or neck, unexplained migraine-type headaches, with or without disturbed vision, or painful swelling in leg should seek immediate medical attention.

    • Women can start taking Cerazette tablet after 21-28 days of delivery.

    • It is very important to take every dose of Cerazette medicine because forgetting even a single dose can make you pregnant in case of having intercourse.

    • Inform the doctor if there is a gap of 24 hours from the previous Cerazette tablet.

    • Avoid Cerazette birth control pill if an allergic reaction has been experienced to any of its ingredients during the previous use.

    • If the patients are less than 12 hours late for missed dose or had vomit within 3-4 hours then take the second dose immediately.

    • Read the leaflet for information such as Cerazette tablet dosage, uses and side effects.

    What else should I know?

    1. Does desogestrel cause unwanted hair growth? Yes, desogestrel has androgenic side effects such as unwanted hair growth in females known as hirsutism.

    2. Does desogestrel delay periods? Yes, while using desogestrel your periods may be delayed beyond the expected date.

    3. Can I use desogestrel as a routine contraceptive? No. It is not recommended to use as a routine contraceptive pill. It is only an emergency contraceptive pill.

    4. Is desogestrel used to treat acne? No, in fact, it causes acne as a side-effect.

    5. Is desogestrel an over-the-counter (OTC) drug? It is available both as OTC and prescription drug. Do not use this drug without consulting your doctor.
