    Elemental calcium Calcium is essential for the human body for various purposes. Calcium can be taken together with Vitamin D to treat bone problems such as thinning of bones. In kidney failure patients, calcium helps to reduce the parathyroid hormone levels. Calcium is also used to treat the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) (e.g. mood swings, pain, food cravings, bloating, etc.) in women. The salt form of calcium is used to treat indigestion problems and heartburn. Vitamin D3 Vitamin D3 is also known as cholecalciferol. It is mainly used to prevent and treat vitamin D deficiency diseases. It improves the absorption of calcium and strengthens bones. It helps to prevent skin and bone diseases in the children and adults. Vitamin D3 is prescribed in combination with phosphate supplements to treat bone disorders. Vitamin D3 improves the absorption of phosphate levels and help to treat phosphate efficiency diseases such as Fanconi syndrome. It is prescribed to improve calcium levels in the patients with parathyroid hormone disorders. It helps to prevent bone loss and softening of bone in the elderly.     Mode of drug action

    Elemental calcium Calcium is an essential mineral for the formation of bones. Increase in the levels of calcium in the blood inhibits the parathyroid gland from secreting the parathyroid hormone. Calcium works by neutralizing the acid in the stomach. Correcting the calcium levels helps in the adequate release of chemical substances from the brain involved in regulating the ovarian hormones, thus, reducing PMS symptoms. Vitamin D3 Vitamin D3 also known as cholecalciferol is catalyzed into its active form calcitriol in the liver with the help of the enzyme 25-hydroxylase. Calcitriol binds to the vitamin D receptor located in the intestine and increases the serum calcium levels by enhancing the gastrointestinal absorption of the phosphorous and calcium. It also increases the reabsorption of calcium from distal renal tubule.

    Elemental calcium The common side effects include belching, gas formation, bloating, and constipation. Vitamin D3 The common side effects reported for vitamin D3 are cough, difficulty in swallowing, dizziness, fast heartbeat, hives or itching, skin rashes, puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes, swelling of face, lips or tongue, skin rash, tightness in the chest and tiredness or weakness.

    Special precautions for safe use

    • Do not take Cipcal tablets if allergic reaction has been experienced to any of its ingredients in the past. There is every possibility to have a similar reaction which may be a serious Cipcal side effect.

    • Cipcal should not be used by the patients with extremely high levels of calcium or vitamin D (e.g. parathyroid gland disorders and sarcoidosis).

    • Before taking any other drugs along with the Cipcal tablets, inform a doctor to avoid unwanted effects due to the interactions. It is especially important to avoid ceftriaxone due to the risk of damage to lungs and kidneys.

    • Tab Cipcal should be taken with caution by people having conditions such as achlorhydria (low stomach acid), hypo or hyperphosphatemia (low or high phosphate levels), hypothyroidism, and poor kidney function.

    • Pregnant or breastfeeding women should take the Cipcal medicine only with a doctor’s recommendation.

    • Do not smoke while taking Cipcal med, because it can reduce the absorption of the drug.

    • Take the exact Cipcal dosage as prescribed by the doctor. Exceeding the dose can lead to unwanted effects of the drug.

    What else should I know?

    1. I have low stomach acid levels. How should I take calcium tablets? Low levels of stomach acid can reduce the absorption of calcium. Therefore, you must take the tablets with meals to increase the absorption.

    2. Can I take thyroid stimulating medications along with calcium? Calcium can interfere with the thyroid medications. Therefore, take these drugs with a time gap of at least 4 hours.

    3. Can I take antibiotics and calcium together? Absorption of some of the antibiotics gets lowered in the presence of calcium. Therefore, give a gap of at least 1 hour between taking the two drugs.
