    Uses :

    Allopurinol is used for the long-term treatment of gout, prevention kidney stones, and reduces the formation of excess uric acid that might occur due to treating certain types of cancer.

    Mode of drug action

    Allopurinol is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor. It works by inhibiting the enzyme xanthine oxidase which is responsible for the formation of uric acid. Thus, allopurinol reduces the levels of uric acid. It is used only for the long-term prevention of gout but not for immediate relief of the symptoms.

    What are the common side effects?

    The common side effects of allopurinol include allergic reactions such as skin rash and itching, urine discoloration, eye irritation, loss of appetite, feeling sick, liver abnormalities, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, constipation, and weigh loss.

    Special precautions for safe use

    • The drug must be taken as per the physician’s instructions. Ciploric is used with caution in the patients with liver and kidney failure, heart disease.

    • Adequate fluid intake is required while on Ciploric medication. Stop administering the medication if the patient develops rash, blistering, ulceration or peeling of the skin, ulcers of the mouth or genitals, irritation of the eye irritation, swelling of the face, fever, joint pains, shortness of breath, or seizures.

    • The drug should be taken with meals to prevent stomach upset. Ciploric can be used in children only in conditions such as hyperuricemia associated with chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

    What else should I know?

    1. Can I take furosemide with allopurinol? Furosemide may cause raised blood levels of allopurinol which increases the severity of the side effects. Consult your doctor before taking the drug.

    2. Is allopurinol safe for use in pregnancy and lactation? Safe use of allopurinol in pregnancy and lactation is not established. Therefore, seek medical advice before taking the drug.

    3. Can I take allopurinol with amoxicillin? Co-administration of allopurinol with amoxicillin may increase the severity of allergic reactions such as skin rash and irritation.

    4. Does allopurinol affect the liver function? Use of allopurinol may cause elevation of the liver enzymes and leads to jaundice.

    5. Can allopurinol cause low platelet levels? Allopurinol may decrease the levels of platelet and increases the risk of infections.
