    Ethambutol is an antibiotic medicine which is used in the treatment of tuberculosis (TB). It is usually given along with other tuberculosis medicines.

    Mode of drug action


    Ethambutol helps to prevent the growth of bacteria possibly by inhibiting arabinosyl transferase enzyme which is required for the synthesis of arabinogalactan, a cell wall component of the TB bacterium.

    What are the common side effects?

    The common side effects of ethambutol are itching or rash, joint pain, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, indigestion, loss of appetite and stomach pain.

    Special precautions for safe use

    • Do not take Combutol tablet if an allergic reaction has been observed with the use of ethambutol in the past.

    • If any eye disorder is already present or has occurred with the drug use, then do not take this medicine. This is because it can cause serious eye problems and even result in irreversible vision loss.

    • Tab Combutol should not be given to young children (below 13 years) and people with certain debilitating conditions as they cannot report vision problems.

    • If any condition such as liver or kidney disease, or gout is present, take the Combutol medicine with caution.

    • Women who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding should inform a doctor before taking this drug. The doctor may decide if the medicine is safe for use in such women.

    4. Is it ok to take antacids along with ethambutol? Take aluminum hydroxide containing antacids 4 hours after taking the ethambutol medicine to help in better absorption of ethambutol.

    5. What is the dose of ethambutol for the prevention of Mycobacterium avium infection in adults? The normal dose of ethambutol for the prevention of Mycobacterium avium infection in adults is 15 mg/Kg, per day, taken by mouth. This medicine is usually given in combination with other drugs.
