    Uses :

    Ethambutol is an antibiotic medicine which is used in the treatment of tuberculosis (TB). It is usually given along with other tuberculosis medicines.

    Mode of drug action


    Ethambutol helps to prevent the growth of bacteria possibly by inhibiting arabinosyl transferase enzyme which is required for the synthesis of arabinogalactan, a cell wall component of the TB bacterium.

    What are the common side effects?

    The common side effects of ethambutol are itching or rash, joint pain, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, indigestion, loss of appetite and stomach pain.

    Special precautions for safe use

    • Inform the doctor about all the current medication before taking Combutol as it may interact with many drugs and reduce the effectiveness of the treatment or aggravate Combutol medicine side effects.

    • Patients wearing contact lenses should consult the doctor before taking Combutol medicine, as it may permanently stain the contact lenses.

    • Taking Combutol drug may produce a brownish-red coloration of the urine, sputum sweat, and tears.

    • Patients who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding or above 65 years should consult the doctor before taking Combutol.

    • Patients who are on oral contraceptive medications for birth control should use other means of contraceptives while on Combutol medication as it may lead to failure of therapy.

    • If you take Combutol irregularly or if daily administration is resumed after a drug-free interval, you may experience ‘flu syndrome’.

    • Combutol should be preferably taken in the morning before breakfast. Taking Combutol with food is known to delay its absorption thereby, reducing its effectiveness.

    • Do not stop taking Combutol without consulting the doctor.

    1. Can I avoid stomach upset with ethambutol tablets? In case you have stomach upset with ethambutol tablets, then taking them with food can be of help.

    2. Should I inform if my weight changes during the therapy with ethambutol tablets? Yes. It is important to inform your doctor if any weight changes occur during the drug use. Your doctor may change the dose of the medicine based on your current weight.

    3. Can I use ethambutol for the treatment of flu? Do not use ethambutol for viral infections such as flu because it is not effective for this purpose.

    4. Is it ok to take antacids along with ethambutol? Take aluminum hydroxide containing antacids 4 hours after taking the Combutol medicine to help in better absorption of ethambutol.

    5. What is the dose of ethambutol for the prevention of Mycobacterium avium infection in adults? The normal dose of ethambutol for the prevention of Mycobacterium avium infection in adults is 15 mg/Kg, per day, taken by mouth. This medicine is usually given in combination with other drugs.
