    Uses :

    Cycloserine is the active ingredient of Cyclorin. It is used as a part of treatment for tuberculosis (TB). Occasionally, this drug is used in the treatment of urinary tract infections, etc. which do not respond to other antibiotic therapies.

    Mode of drug action

    Cycloserine is an antibiotic drug which prevents the growth of the TB bacterium in the human body. It works by preventing the bacterial cell wall synthesis, causing their death.

    What are the common side effects?

    The common cycloserine side effects are seizures, tingling or numbness of the hands and feet, tremors, drowsiness, dizziness, difficulty with speech, and skin rashes.

    Special precautions for safe use

    • If a history of hypersensitivity or allergic response with cycloserine is present, then do not take Cyclorin.

    • People with seizures, certain mood disorders, and kidney disease should not take this medicine.

    • Do not consume alcohol while taking Cyclorin. Those who have a history of alcohol abuse should avoid this medicine.

    • Avoid activities which require high alertness such as working with heavy machines or driving vehicles. This is because Cyclorin causes side effects such as drowsiness and dizziness.

    • Immediately seek medical help in case of mental confusion, skin rashes, headache and tremors with Cyclorin.

    • In case of pregnancy, plan for pregnancy or lactation, women should first talk to a doctor before taking cycloserine. This is to ensure safety of the medicine for the baby.

    • Take the medicine exactly as per the doctor’s directions.

    What else should I know?

    1. What happens if alcohol is taken with Cyclorin? Alcohol consumption during the Cyclorin medication can increase the risk of fits, dizziness and drowsiness. Therefore, avoid it.

    2. What is the dose of Cyclorin medicine for the treatment of TB? The normal oral dose of Cyclorin given to treat TB is 0.5 to 1 gram per day, either as a single dose or as divided doses. However, talk to a doctor to know the dose appropriate for you.

    3. How long is the treatment of TB with Cyclorin? Usually, the treatment lasts for about 18-24 months during which maximum improvement occurs. Therefore, do not stop the medication in between unless instructed by your doctor.

    4. What should I do if I miss a dose of Cyclorin? Take the missed dose as soon as you have realized. But, if it is almost time for your next dose, then leave out the missed dose and take the next dose at its regular time. Never take two tablets at once to make up for the forgotten dose.

    5. What should I do if I take an overdose of Cyclorin medication? Call up for immediate medical help in case of an overdose of the Cyclorin medication.
