    USES :

Cefixime is used in the treatment of bacterial infections of ear, nose, throat, sinuses, urinary system, and throat infection. Clavulanic acid is widely used to treat the common bacterial infections, respiratory tract infections, and urinary tract infections. Clavulanic acid is also prescribed during the myeloablative therapy followed by bone marrow transplantation.

    How does the drug work?

Cefixime is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It acts by inhibiting the cell wall synthesis. Cefixime binds to one of the penicillin binding protein and inhibits the formation of the cell wall. The inhibition of the formation of cell wall results in the death of the bacterial cell. Beta-lactamase is a protein secreted by certain bacteria which can make them resistant to some antibiotics such as penicillin/cephalosporin. Clavulanic acid irreversibly inactivates a wide variety of beta-lactamases, thereby making the penicillin/cephalosporin drugs more potent.
