    Fluvoxamine tablets are mainly used to treat depression, schizophrenia (psychiatric disorder with symptoms such as detachment from reality, emotional instability, hallucinations, delusions, and withdrawal into the self), anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) a mental disorder where people think they need to perform certain routine activities repeatedly.

    Mode of drug action


    Fluvoxin tablets contain drug fluvoxamine maleate which belongs to a class of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). Fluvoxamine acts by restoring the balance of serotonin in the brain, thereby relieving the symptoms of depression and OCD.

    What are the common side effects?

    The common side effects of fluvoxamine include nausea and vomiting, confusion, nervousness, drowsiness, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, flatulence, dry mouth, headache, impaired concentration, loss of appetite, stomach pain, unsteadiness, weakness, weight loss, altered libido, and altered sexual function.

    Special precautions for safe use

    • Do not start fluvoxamine drug without consulting the doctor.

    • Patients with kidney, liver or heart problems, diabetes, fits, a history of mania (abnormal over excitation), bleeding disorder, or glaucoma should consult the doctor before taking fluvoxamine.

    • Stop taking fluvoxamine and seek an immediate medical advice in case of allergy, sleepiness, extreme agitation, increased fits frequency, the feeling of being elated or over excited, or suicidal thoughts after taking fluvoxamine.

    • Drinking alcohol, while on fluvoxamine treatment, may worsen the side effects of the drug.

    • Do not drive or operate heavy machinery while taking fluvoxamine as it may affect your co-ordination and judgment.

    • Inform the doctor in case of pregnancy or planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding.

    1. Can I take fluvoxamine with ibuprofen? Ibuprofen, when taken with fluvoxamine, may lead to increased bruising or bleeding. Always consult your doctor before taking the medication.

    2. Is fluvoxamine safe during pregnancy? No. Fluvoxamine may be unsafe during pregnancy. Consult your doctor before taking the medication.

    3. Is fluvoxamine safe for patients with glaucoma? Fluvoxamine is safe when taken as per the prescribed dose in the patients with glaucoma.

    4. When is it safe to take fluvoxamine, with food or without food? Fluvoxamine is safe with and without food. But it is better to take this medicine at a fixed time.

    5. Does fluvoxamine cause weight gain? No. Fluvoxamine usually causes weight loss as a side-effect. If you notice weight gain after taking Fluvoxin consult your doctor immediately.
