    Uses :

    Glipizide is used to lower the blood glucose levels in the patients with Type-2 diabetes mellitus which is not controlled by diet and exercise alone.

    Mode of drug action


    Glipizide belong to a class of drugs called sulphonylurea. Glipizide acts by enhancing insulin secretion in the body thereby reducing he blood glucose levels.

    What are the common side effects?

    The common side effects for glipizide include nausea and vomiting, itchy rash, abdominal pain, jaundice, abnormal liver function tests, blurred vision, diarrhea, dizziness, hypoglycemia, sleepiness, and tremor.

    Special precautions for safe use

    • Do not take Glycotop SR tablet for type 1 diabetes mellitus patients or for the patients with impaired consciousness due to severe diabetes, liver or kidney disease, or for the patients deficient in an enzyme called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD).

    • Avoid taking Glycotop SR medicine if you have hypersensitivity to glipizide or other similar medications to minimize Glycotop SR side effects.

    • Pregnant and breastfeeding patients should consult the physician before taking Glycotop SR drug as it can harm the fetus and baby.

    • Inform the doctor in case a recent injury (trauma), fever, or severe infection or about to undergo surgery.

    What else should I know?

    1. Is it safe to take glipizide if I have sulfa allergy? Glipizide is not contraindicated in patient with sulfa allergy. Glipizide belongs to a class of drugs called sulphonylureas.

    2. Can I take ibuprofen with glipizide? No. Concomitant intake of glipizide and ibuprofen may cause hypoglycemia. Consult your doctor before taking any medication.

    3. Is it safe to take glipizide tablets with insulin safely? Yes, you can take glipizide with insulin if prescribed by your doctor.

    4. I have just started taking glipizide tablets, is it safe to drive? No. Glipizide may cause dizziness and symptoms of hypoglycemia (blurring vision, fainting, sweating).

    5. Is glipizide safe during pregnancy? No. Glipizide may harm the fetus, it is unsafe during pregnancy.
