    Insulin Lispro Insulin Lispro is used to reduce high blood glucose levels in people with diabetes mellitus. Humalog insulin is used to treat both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Insulin Lispro Protamine Insulin Lispro Protamine is also used to reduce blood sugar level in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

    Mode of drug action


    Insulin lispro Insulin lispro is a rapid and short-acting, artificially prepared form of human insulin. Humalog insulin acts by replacing the natural insulin thereby helping transfer glucose from the blood into the other body tissues. Insulin lispro protamine Insulin lispro protamine reduces the blood glucose levels by stimulating the glucose uptake by skeletal cells and fat cells and inhibiting the hepatic glucose production.

    What are the common side effects?

    Insulin lispro The common side effects of insulin lispro include injection site itching redness, and swelling, constipation, bone-marrow suppression, and an increase in body weight. Insulin lispro protamine The common side effects of insulin lispro protamine include nausea, skin rash, increased thirst, sweating, wheezing, and itching.

    Special precautions for safe use

    • Stop using Humalog Kiwikpen in case of any allergic reactions.

    • Humalog must be administered under the skin shortly before meals or when necessary shortly after meals.

    • Avoid Humalog Kiwikpen in patients with kidney or liver problems, heart failure or other heart problems.

    • Avoid alcohol while using Humalog Kiwikpen.

    • Consult the doctor for special precautions while using Humalog Kiwikpen if the patient does not eat regular meals, or exercise a lot, or feeling weak or ill.

    • Report the doctor immediately if experiencing any symptoms such as hypoglycemia after using Humalog Kiwikpen.

    • Inform the doctor about the patient’s medication history including vitamins and herbal supplements.

    • Avoid injecting Humalog into a vein or a muscle which may be fatal at times.

    • Injection sites must be rotated between upper arm, abdomen, buttocks and thigh area from one injection to the next, to reduce the skin changes at the injection site.

    • Do not dilute or mix any two preparations of insulin or Humalog Kiwikpen.

    • Do not use if Humalog Kiwikpen is unclear and colored or if it contains particles.

    • Read and follow the instructions provided with the Humalog Mix vial, for loading a cartridge, attaching a needle, performing a safety test and administering the insulin injection.

    1. Is it safe to take alcohol with insulin lispro? No. Taking alcohol with insulin lispro may affect blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes.

    2. Is insulin lispro long acting? No. Insulin lispro is a rapid and short-acting, artificially prepared form of human insulin.

    3. Does insulin lispro come in a pen formulation? Yes, insulin lispro is available in a pen style formulation.

    4. Is insulin lispro given intravenously? Yes, it can be given if necessary under medical supervision in certain conditions such as ketoacidosis, acute illnesses, or during intraoperative and postoperative periods.
