    Uses :

    Lamotrigine is used to treat epileptic seizures in adults and children, and mood swings associated with bipolar disorders. Additionally, lamotrigine is used to treat symptoms of Lennox-gastaut syndrome (delays development in children).

    Mode of drug action


    Lamotrigine is an antiepileptic drug and belongs to phenyltriazine class. Lamotrigine inhibits voltage-sensitive sodium and calcium channels, thereby, stabilizing neuronal membranes and inhibits presynaptic transmitter release of glutamate and aspartate (excitatory amino acids). This slows down the abnormal nerve impulses in the brain.

    What are the common side effects?

    The common side effects of lamotrigine are joint pain, back pain, insomnia, rashes, headache, dry mouth, dizziness, long sleep, tremor, vomiting, fatigue, pain, and aggression.

    Special precautions for safe use

    • Lamosyn should not be taken with dofetilide, as it causes drug-drug interactions.

    • Patients with mental and mood problems should not take Lamosyn tab, as it may worsen the symptoms.

    • Drugs such as anti viral, estrogens, or succinimides should not be taken along with Lamosyn drug, as these drugs may decrease the effectiveness of Lamosyn.

    •Lamosyn should be taken with food to reduce stomach irritation.

    • Continue taking Lamosyn even if the symptoms subside. Do not miss any doses.

    • Do not stop taking Lamosyn drug abruptly, as it may alter the seizure frequency. Tapering of the drug is needed.

    What else should I know?

    1. I am on dialysis. Can I take lamotrigine medication? Patients on dialysis treatment should not take lamotrigine medication.

    2. Can I use carbamazepine along with lamotrigine tablet? No, carbamazepine may increase the risk of lamotrigine side effects such as dizziness.

    3. Can I take birth control pills while on lamotrigine drug? No, concomitant use of the drugs may decrease the effectiveness of both the drugs.

    4. Should I stop consuming alcohol while taking lamotrigine tablet? Yes, stop consuming alcohol when on treatment with lamotrigine, as it increases the risk of side effects such as dizziness.

    5. When can I stop taking Lamitor OD drug? Do not stop Lamitor OD drug unless advised by the doctor.
