    Uses :

    Leflunomide is the active ingredient of Lefumide. It is used for the management of rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis and their symptoms. It helps in preventing or reducing the damage of the joint and improves the overall function of the joint.

    Mode of drug action

    Leflunomide belongs to the class of anti-rheumatic agents. It acts on the immune system to reduce the inflammation and swelling in the body.

    What are the common side effects?

    The common leflunomide side effects are headache, nausea, upset stomach, diarrhea, abnormal liver function tests, thinning hair, cold symptoms (stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat, etc.) and rash.

    Special precautions for safe use

    • Do not take Lefumide if a previous allergic response was seen with the use of leflunomide.

    • Patients with severe liver or kidney problems, severely low blood proteins, weak immune system, bone marrow problems (i.e. lowered blood cells), and serious infections should not take Lefumide.

    • Cautious use of the medicine is required by the patients with lung diseases, and tuberculosis (TB). Ask a doctor for the precautions to be taken.

    • Males who are looking for a baby should use this medicine cautiously. This is because of the chances of entry of Lefumide into the semen.

    • Women who are negative for pregnancy tests and are not breastfeeding the baby only should use this medicine.

    • A regular monitoring of blood pressure, blood cells and liver function tests are required during leflunomide therapy.

    • This medicine is not recommended for children and adolescents aged less than 18 years.

    • Do not receive any vaccination during the treatment with leflunomide as the vaccine may not be effective. Ask a doctor for help.

    • Taking other drugs along with leflunomide needs a doctor’s advice. This is to ensure safety from the unwanted interactions between the drugs taken together.
