    Atorvastatin is used to reduce high cholesterol levels in the body and to lower stroke and heart attacks. It is also used to treat heart complications in patients suffering from type 2 diabetes. Additionally, atorvastatin is used to lower bad cholesterol in the body. Ezetimibe is used for lowering the abnormal cholesterol levels in the blood. It reduces the amount of cholesterol absorbed from the diet. Lowering the cholesterol levels in the body aids in the prevention of strokes and heart attacks.

    Mode of drug action

    Atorvastatin: Atorvastatin is an HMG-CoA reductase which is responsible for converting this enzyme into mevalonate in the cholesterol biosynthesis pathway. This results in the subsequent decrease of hepatic cholesterol levels and increases hepatic uptake of LDL-C concentrations. Ezetimibe: Ezetimibe blocks the action of Neimann-pick C1-like 1 (NPC1L1) protein on gastrointestinal tract epithelial cells which is the critical mediator of cholesterol absorption. It inhibits the absorption of cholesterol from small intestine and decreases the amount of cholesterol available to liver cells.
