    Moxonidine is the active ingredient of the medicine Moxovas. It is an anti-hypertensive agent which is used to treat high blood pressure.

    Mode of drug action


    Moxonidine works on the brain to cause relaxation of the blood vessels. This results in the widening of the vessels and thus, it helps to reduce the blood pressure.

    What are the common side effects?

    The common side effects of moxonidine are dryness of mouth, back pain, dizziness, headache, weakness, rashes, itching, sleeping difficulties, indigestion and diarrhea.

    Special precautions for safe use

    • It is not advisable to take Moxovas tablet if an allergic reaction has been experienced with moxonidine in the past.

    • Patients with serious kidney problems, heart failure, or slow heart rate should not take this medication.

    • Dosage adjustment may be required in patients with mild to moderate kidney problems.

    • Tell the doctor about any other medicines, especially other blood pressure lowering drugs or drugs for heart conditions being used. These medicines can impact the blood pressure lowering effect of Moxovas.

    • Alcohol consumption can increase the effects such as drowsiness with the use of moxonidine tablets.

    • Pregnant and lactating females should tell a doctor before taking moxonidine. The doctor may prescribe an alternative medicine for such women.

    • Children and adolescents (aged below 18 years) should not take tab Moxovas.

    • Take the medicine as per the doctor’s prescription without increasing or decreasing the moxonidine dose. This helps to reduce or avoid the unwanted effects associated with the drug use.

    • You may have to take Moxovas for your whole life or as suggested by the physician. So, do not stop the medicine without asking a doctor.

    1. Can I take alcohol while using the moxonidine? It is never advisable to consume alcohol while on treatment with moxonidine.

    2. Should I take moxonidine on empty stomach? You may take moxonidine with or without food because its absorption is not affected by the presence or absence of food.

    3. Can I stop taking the medicine if I do not have symptoms of hypertension? Hypertension does not always produce symptoms. Therefore, do not stop taking the medicine unless your doctor advices you to do so.

    4. What happens if I take more than what is prescribed? Taking more than the prescribed dose can result in side effects such as headache, sedation, an extreme fall in blood pressure, dizziness, stomach pain, and slow heart rate. Immediately consult a doctor for treatment.

    5. What is the starting dose of moxonidine tablet? The usual starting dose of moxonidine is 200 mcg per day, taken through mouth. However, based on the other conditions, a different dose may be required. So, talk to your doctor.
