    Pioglitazone is an antidiabetic medicine used to control the blood sugar levels during the treatment of type 2 diabetic patients.

    Mode of drug action


    Pioglitazone increases the sensitivity of peripheral cells for insulin, thus, increasing the glucose uptake by the cells. It also inhibits the release of glucose from the liver. However, pioglitazone does not cause the release of insulin from pancreas.

    What are the common side effects?

    The common side effects of pioglitazone are headache, cold symptoms (e.g. stuffy nose, sneezing, sinus pain), muscle pain, and sore throat.

    Special precautions for safe use

    • People with severe heart failure, bladder cancer, diabetic ketoacidosis (excess ketones in the blood) should not take pioglitazone.

    • Stop taking pioglitazone in case of swelling, shortness of breath, or rapid weight gain. This is because pioglitazone can worsen heart failure.

    • If a past allergic reaction has been experienced with pioglitazone, do not take pioglitazone as there is a high possibility of such reactions to occur again.

    • Take additional precautions as suggested by the doctor if conditions such as liver disease, certain heart diseases, fluid retention, or stroke are present.

    • This medicine is unsafe for use in patients aged below 18 years.

    • Women are more likely to have fractures while using pioglitazone and should discuss with their doctor for safety measures.

    • Pioglitazone may induce menstrual cycles in women who had no or irregular periods earlier. Therefore, a proper birth control measure may be required while using pioglitazone.

    • It is very important to control blood sugar levels in pregnant women. Women who are pregnant, planning for pregnancy or are breastfeeding should take a doctor’s opinion before using pioglitazone.
