    Uses :

    Pirfenidone is used to treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). In this condition, swelling and fibrosis or scarring of the lung tissue is observed due to inflammation. Pirfenidone also reduces the worsening of IPF.

    Mode of drug action


    Pirfenidone belongs to the class of pyridones. It works by down regulation of the production of procollagenase I and II that play a major role in fibrosis.

    What are the common side effects?

    The common side effects of pirfenidone are indigestion, nausea, dry skin, fatigue, decrease in liver enzymes, headache, dizziness, and weight loss.

    Special precautions for safe use

    • Do not use if there is a history of allergy to Pirfenex tablet or any drug belonging to the class of pyridones.

    • Avoid smoking or chewing tobacco.

    • Tab Pirfenex use is contraindicated in patients taking fluvoxamine.

    • Use with caution in patients using fluoxetine, paroxetine, omeprazole, and chloramphenicol as these drugs interfere with Pirfenex metabolism.

    • Use with caution in patients with liver impairment.

    • Use with a doctor’s advice in pregnant and breastfeeding women.

    1. Can pirfenidone be taken after food? It is good to take after a meal to reduce nausea and dizziness associated with pirfenidone. However, discuss with your doctor for case-specific recommendations.

    2. Is pirfenidone a steroid? No. Pirfenidone is not a steroid. It belongs to the class of pyridone used to treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

    3. Is pirfenidone photosensitive? Yes. You may become sensitive to sunlight. Therefore, avoid sun exposure and use of tanning lamps. Apply sunscreen lotion and wear protective clothing while going outdoors.

    4. Can I take alcohol while using pirfenidone? You should not take alcohol, drive, or operate heavy machinery as this drug can cause dizziness.
