    Sevelamer is a phosphate binder. It prevents hyperphosphatemia by binding to the phosphate in the food. This inhibits the absorption and decreases the serum parathyroid hormone levels. The decrease in the phosphate levels improves kidney functions and other related diseases.

    The common side effects of sevelamer are abdominal bloating, nausea, constipation, headache, vomiting, cough, diarrhea, and flatulence.
