    Uses :

    Sotalol is used to treatment of atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter (irregular heartbeat). It is also used to treat sustained ventricular tachycardia (fast heartbeat).

    Mode of drug action


    Sotalol belongs to the class of antiarrhythmics. Sotalol inhibits the response to the adrenergic stimuli by blocking beta-adrenergic receptors in the bronchial and vascular smooth muscles. This helps to regularize the heartbeat.

    What are the common side effects?

    The common side effects of sotalol are constipation, headache, lightheadedness, limb swelling, muscle pain, fatigue, wheezing, chest pain, and stomach upset.

    Special precautions for safe use

    • Avoid taking sotalol medication with coffee, tea, chocolates or other caffeine related products, as these may decrease the availability of sotalol drug.

    • Do not consume alcohol while taking sotalol drug, as it may have addictive effects.

    • Patients who start taking sotalol treatment should have regular monitoring of heart and kidney function.

    • Sotalol may worsen condition such as Torsades de Pointes. Report to the doctor immediately, if the condition becomes severe.

    • Do not use other drugs that consists sotalol while taking these tablets.

    What else should I know?

    1. Should I take sotalol medicine along with food or without food? Sotalol should be taken an hour before food.

    2. Is sotalol safe during breastfeeding? Sotalol may pass into the breast milk and may harm newborn.

    3. Can I take antacids with sotalol drug? Do not take antacids within two hours before or after taking sotalol drug.

    4. When should I stop taking sotalol? Do not stop sotalol abruptly, as it may cause withdrawal effects such as chest pain.

    5. Does sotalol causes weight gain/loss? Sotalol causes weight gain. Report to the doctor, if there is a drastic change in the weight.
